These photographs were taken during six months in Africa on a road trip finishing April ’24, driving eight and a half thousand miles across eighteen countries from Marrakech to Cape Town.
My approach was to produce a visual study of unscripted observation and record with locations determined by the road taken and time available en route. The intention was to mix Art with social documentary, where the dividing line in between is sometimes abstract. The pictures are from a full series of two hundred, about the land and people. The first draft of writing for an essay is currently with an Editor and a book layout is in design. I want to convey the atmosphere and powerful feelings caused by exposure to the heat, light, people, mise en scenes and very different culture. Ideally, the pictures’ will seduce the viewer with aesthetic and subject matter. And, provoke imagination about what lies beyond the viewfinder’s frame and reflection about Africa’s place in the world today.
